Frequently asked questions

Yes. Trademark registration is territorial. Your trademark registered in France, the EU or elsewhere does not protect you in the UAE. You must file a separate UAE application with the Ministry of Economy to obtain local protection. Without UAE registration, you cannot prevent others from registering or using your mark locally.
The process typically takes 12 to 18 months from filing, including examination, publication and opposition period. An initial filing confirmation is issued earlier. The timeline can be extended if there are objections from the Trademark Office or oppositions from third parties during the publication phase.
 
Trademarks are registered by Nice Classification class. You must register in every class covering your current products or services, and ideally in adjacent classes covering likely future activities. Under-registration leaves gaps that competitors can exploit by registering in the classes you omitted.
Yes, and it is strongly recommended for businesses operating in the UAE market. Registering both the English and Arabic versions of your brand provides comprehensive protection. Arabic transliterations and translations of foreign marks should be checked carefully, as some Arabic renderings of foreign words have unintended meanings.

With a registered trademark you can pursue civil claims for injunction and damages, customs recordal to stop infringing imports, and criminal complaints for wilful infringement. Without registration, remedies are significantly weaker and more expensive to exercise. Registration gives the clearest and fastest enforcement route.
